Reflections on the Readings

Reflections:

Parts of the letter:
The reading, Parts of the Letter, pertained to this specific project because both dealt with the use of learning how to create typography. The reading taught me the basic vocabulary of typography, which I was able to use correctly while my group and I constructed our three-foot letters. I think the reading was very helpful because as a graphic designer, I will deal a lot with different types of typography and now I know the basic vocabulary of type.

Photo Ops:
In the reading, Photo Ops, I learned that there are many different techniques to think about when taking a picture. Whether it’s taking pictures with friends, pictures on vacation, or portrait style pictures, it is essential to think about your technique. All the techniques talked about in the reading, symmetry, repetition, close-up, framing, continuous, exploration, movement, and serendipity, pertained to this group project. We, as a group, were challenged to step outside the box of an ordinary photograph and get creative. We were challenged to find unique angels to take our photo from and also creative sites around campus.

Photography Steve Edwards:
The reading taught me things I never knew before like how photography was first used and when it was first documented. It talked a lot about how photography was used in prisons and documentation in prisons. I actually found this chapter very interesting because I never knew much about the history of photography. This reading covered all the history from when photography first started until now. Although I am not one much for history, I actually wanted to read more. I’ve always been interested in photography even though I don’t think it’s really for me. Steve Edwards’ chapter pertains to this project we are doing in class because we are actually documenting our own creative work and being challenged to make our photograph make sense without words.

My thoughts on the photo essay accordion style book:

I don't want to do it but here goes nothing...

Getting Better...

I'm definitely getting better at updating my blog!

Anyways, we took our final picture today! It was my first time being inside the Oread and oh my gosh, it is huge! The rooms are absolutely gorgeous and the staff was so nice and considerate to us and our 3 feet letters!

waiting outside a hotel room for the employee to come let us in!

the final picture! i know it's hard to see on here but it's so cool! We ended up taking EX, PA, and ND at different times and then Yvonne used her photo media skills to compile the picture!

Now it's time to put all my focus on this photo essay book! I'm so glad it's taking place of the process notebook. It gives me a chance to be more creative and in fact, it seems easier!

STRESSSSSSSS

This project is so stressful! There is so much to do and so little time to do it! We finally finished our letters and go the picture taken today though! We painted our letters with primer in hopes of the spray paint sticking to the cardboard better and it did! I can't believe how much spray paint it took to cover these letters! We also bought black duct tape and taped the edges on the letters so they stood out more. We took our final picture on top of the Oread Hotel this morning! I actually had family in town so I wasn't able to be there but I heard it looks really good and I'm excited to see what the pictures look like! I just made my dummy photo essay book and it's actually a lot easier to make then I thought. If I end up having extra time, I may google how to make a really creative one!

p.s. The person in my dorm who stole my digital camera finally gave it back... I still don't know who took it though and all my pictures are deleted! Time to catch up on taking pictures of this project though!

Color Advice!

Oh the places we go

Yvonne decided to go out and take pictures for our group of possible place we would be able to place our word expand.

My words

For the group project, the word we chose to use is:
Expand-
–verb (used with object)
1.
to increase in extent, size, volume, scope, etc.: Heatexpands most metals. He hopes to expand his company.
2.
to spread or stretch out; unfold: A bird expands its wings.
3.
to express in fuller form or greater detail; develop: toexpand a short story into a novel.

For the individual project, my word I chose to use is:
Change-
–verb (used with object)
1.
to make the form, nature, content, future course, etc., of(something) different from what it is or from what it wouldbe if left alone: to change one's nameto change one'sopinion; to change the course of history.
2.
to transform or convert (usually fol. by into ): The witchchanged the prince into a toad.
3.
to substitute another or others for; exchange for somethingelse, usually of the same kind: She changed her shoes whenshe got home from the office.

Project 4

I am really enjoying project 4 so much more then any other project. I have always liked typography and color and so this project is right for me. It's fun to manipulate the text by using tools on Adobe Illustrator that I have never used before. Also, I think the process notebook will be easier this time for me because I'm actually staying organized and have everything separated!
